Oliver Peoples sunglasses
Oliver Peoples sunglasses have an expression that is quite easy to recognise. The inspiration from Los Angeles, Hollywood and American vintage is almost always there, but without the models feeling overly retro. Instead, it is very much about well-balanced shapes, fine materials and details that are happy to stay discreet.
The brand was founded in Los Angeles in 1987 and has since become a true classic in the eyewear world. At Hultins Optik you will find a hand-picked range of Oliver Peoples sunglasses with both classic models and new arrivals from the latest collections.
Sunglasses with roots in Los Angeles
The story of Oliver Peoples begins in West Hollywood, where the first store opened on Sunset Boulevard in 1987. Inspiration came from, among other things, older American glasses and sunglasses, Hollywood, art, music and the creative scene of Los Angeles.
That heritage is still clearly visible in the collections.
Many models have a feeling of American vintage, but Oliver Peoples has been skilful at not getting stuck in a particular era. A shape may well be inspired by the 1950s or 60s and still feel exactly right today. That is also one of the reasons why several older models have stayed around for so long.
Craftsmanship, acetate and tinted lenses
Much of the feeling in Oliver Peoples sunglasses lies in the materials and the details. The collections include both heavier acetate frames and slim metal frames, often with small details you might not notice until you hold the frame in your hand.
The lenses are also an important part of the design. Oliver Peoples works a lot with different colours and tints and has long used lighter tinted lenses as part of its expression. Brown, green, grey and blue appear often, together with various gradient tints.
That is something we really like about Oliver Peoples. The combination of frame and lens often feels thought through as a whole, and the colour of the lens can do a great deal for the end result.
Classic Oliver Peoples sunglasses
Over the years Oliver Peoples has created several models that have become true classics. Gregory Peck, Cary Grant and O’Malley are three good examples, models that in different ways capture much of what has made the brand famous.
Gregory Peck was created with inspiration from the glasses the actor wore as Atticus Finch in the film To Kill a Mockingbird. The model is also available as sunglasses in the form of Gregory Peck Sun and has become one of Oliver Peoples’ best-known models.
Cary Grant Sun has another clear connection to Hollywood. Here the inspiration comes from the sunglasses Cary Grant wore in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest from 1959. The result is a fairly heavy acetate frame with lots of character, yet classic enough to last over time.
Another style icon who has inspired Oliver Peoples is Paul Newman. His relaxed style and fondness for classic pilot sunglasses are behind the Paul Newman model, a slim pilot frame that feels very much Oliver Peoples. It is a model with a clear vintage feel, but without feeling like a pair of sunglasses from another time.
The very connection to people like Gregory Peck, Cary Grant and Paul Newman says quite a lot about Oliver Peoples. It is not so much about fast trends, but rather about people and shapes that still feel relevant many years later.
Oliver Peoples O’Malley Sun
O’Malley is another model that is almost impossible not to mention when talking about Oliver Peoples. The original model was launched as early as 1988 and has over the years become one of the brand’s great signature models.
The rounded and relatively delicate shape is also available as O’Malley Sun. Just like the optical model, the sunglasses have been made in many different colours and finishes over the years.
O’Malley also has a place in film history. The model was worn by Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho and is today strongly associated with both the film and Oliver Peoples.
Oliver Peoples prescription sunglasses
If you need a prescription in your sunglasses, we can of course help you with that. Many Oliver Peoples models are very well suited to being made into prescription sunglasses, and there is plenty of scope to adapt both colour and tint.
Here you do not always have to try to match the lenses the frame originally came with. Sometimes a different tone can suit the colour of the frame even better. If you want something more personal, we can help you find a combination that works both in terms of looks and how you will use your sunglasses.
If you do not have a current prescription, you can book an eye examination with one of our licensed opticians.
