Masunaga
Masunaga is a Japanese eyewear brand with roots in Fukui and a history that stretches all the way back to 1905. The brand has played an important role in the development of the Japanese eyewear industry and is known today for its precision, its craftsmanship and an approach to quality where even the smallest details are taken seriously.

At Hultins Optik you will find a hand-picked range of Masunaga glasses and sunglasses.

From Fukui since 1905
The story of Masunaga begins with Gozaemon Masunaga, who wanted to establish eyewear manufacturing as a new industry in Fukui. Craftsmen were invited to teach the trade, and the knowledge then spread throughout the region.

What began in 1905 eventually became something much bigger. Fukui is known today all over the world for its eyewear production, and Masunaga has been part of the journey from the start. More than 120 years later, Masunaga frames are still made in Japan.
Masunaga glasses and sunglasses
Masunaga glasses and sunglasses often have a fairly understated expression. There are classic shapes, slim titanium frames, acetate and models where the materials are combined.

There are rarely big logos or details crying out for attention. Instead, much of it is about proportions, materials and small details you might not discover until you look a little closer. That is also a big part of Masunaga’s charm.

A seemingly simple titanium frame can turn out to have wonderfully fine engravings and worked details. On the acetate frames it may instead be the polish, the colour or the way different materials meet that makes the difference.

Japanese craftsmanship in-house
One of the things that really sets Masunaga apart from many other eyewear brands is its control over manufacturing.

A large part of the process takes place within the company, from making moulds and components to machining, assembly, polishing and final finish. Many steps still require manual work and craftsmen with long experience. You notice it when you hold the frames. The transitions between materials are fine, the metalwork is precise and the acetate is properly polished. There is a sense of precision in both construction and finish that is hard to convey in pictures alone.
More than 120 years of Japanese eyewear manufacturing
In 2025 Masunaga celebrated 120 years. That is quite an impressive history for an eyewear brand, and it means the company has seen many trends come and go.

Perhaps that is also one reason why Masunaga rarely feels particularly trend-driven.

The design is often based on classic shapes refined through proportions, materials and details. The result is frames that can feel modern without being created for a specific season.
A selected Masunaga collection at Hultins Optik
At Hultins Optik we choose the Masunaga glasses and sunglasses we stock ourselves. We try to find a good mix of classic models and frames that show a little more of what Masunaga can do with materials, construction and colour. It might be a really slim titanium frame, a combination of metal and acetate or a model where the shape is allowed to take up a little more space. What they share is the craftsmanship.

Masunaga is simply a brand for those who appreciate glasses where the quality does not need to sit in a big logo on the temple. Much of what makes them special you only discover when you try the frame and look more closely at how it is actually made.
