Masunaga sunglasses

Masunaga sunglasses combine Japanese craftsmanship with a design language that is often both classic and slightly distinctive. This might be a slim aviator-style frame in titanium, a frame in acetate, or a combination of both materials.

The common thread lies in the details.

Masunaga has been manufacturing glasses in Fukui, Japan, since 1905, and this long history of expertise is evident in their sunglasses too. Design, materials and finish take centre stage, whilst large logos and details that are there merely to be seen are conspicuous by their absence.

At Hultins Optik, you’ll find a hand-picked, seasonally updated range of Masunaga sunglasses.

Japanese sunglasses from Fukui

Fukui is today the centre of the Japanese eyewear industry, and Masunaga has been part of its development since the early 1900s.

Much has, of course, changed since then, but the philosophy behind eyewear manufacturing lives on. A great deal of the expertise is still concentrated within the company, and many stages of the process require manual labour and great precision.

These may sound like details that are mainly of interest to those who are truly passionate about eyewear. But when you try on a pair of Masunaga glasses, you quickly realise why it matters.

The frames feel meticulously crafted.

Masunaga sunglasses in titanium and acetate

Titanium is a material often associated with Japanese eyewear, and it is used extensively by Masunaga. The material is particularly well-suited to thin and lightweight designs and is used both for full-frame designs and in combination with acetate. But Masunaga also produces sunglasses where acetate features much more prominently.

This gives the collections great variety. A thin metal frame can have a delicate, almost minimalist look, whilst a more substantial acetate model makes a bolder statement. In between, there are combination frames where titanium and acetate are used together.

If you look a little closer, the typical Masunaga details often emerge. Finished temples, delicate engravings and meticulously crafted transitions between the materials are what make the frames interesting, even when the shape itself is quite classic.

Classic shapes with Japanese details

Masunaga likes to work with shapes that feel familiar. Round sunglasses, square models and aviator shapes are recurring themes, but the proportions and details give them a character all of their own. It’s a combination we like.

A good example is Masunaga’s aviator models. Rather than simply producing yet another classic aviator frame, the construction, the finish of the titanium and the small details around the front and temples can transform the entire look. In the same way, a fairly simple acetate frame can become something completely different when the proportions are just right and the material has been given a really good finish.

Masunaga K3 Taka Sun

The K3 Taka Sun showcases a slightly more expressive side of Masunaga. It is a classic pilot-style model, but on closer inspection, it is above all the construction and the details that make it special.

Masunaga K3 Taka Sun S31 pilotsolglasögon

The frame is made from Japanese titanium, which makes it both lightweight and sturdy. The slim design is combined with finely crafted details and a finish typical of Masunaga.

It’s a model that encapsulates much of what we love about Japanese eyewear. The shape doesn’t need to be complicated when the craftsmanship is truly excellent.

Masunaga prescription sunglasses

If you’d like prescription lenses in your Masunaga sunglasses, we can of course help you with that. Many models are well-suited to prescription lenses, and there are plenty of options for customising both the colour and tint to match the frame.

This is also a great opportunity to make your sunglasses a little more personalised. A brown, green or grey tint creates different looks, and on the right frame, even a gradient tint or a slightly more unusual lens colour can look really stylish. We’d be happy to help you find a combination that works well with both the frame and how you intend to use your sunglasses.

If you don’t have a current prescription, you can book an eye test with one of our qualified opticians.

A range that varies with the seasons

Our range of Masunaga sunglasses varies throughout the year. During autumn and winter, the range is usually smaller, whilst we stock up on more models as the sunglasses season approaches.

This also means that models and colours may come and go.

We hand-pick the Masunaga sunglasses we stock and try to find models that showcase different aspects of the brand. Sometimes the focus is on slim titanium frames and classic aviator styles; at other times, you’ll find more acetate frames and styles that make a bolder statement.
