Oscar Magnuson at Hultins Optik
We have a rather special relationship with Oscar Magnuson. Back in 2006, Oscar sat in our little kitchen at Hultins Optik and showed us his very first eyewear collection of his own. At the time, the range consisted of four women’s models and four men’s models. A lot has happened since then, but we still recognise the same feel for shape and design that made us curious at our very first meeting.
Before founding his own brand, Oscar Magnuson had worked on eyewear design for Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli, among others. With his own brand he was able to develop a more personal design language, inspired by contemporary art, architecture, fashion and music.
Today Oscar Magnuson is an established Swedish design brand with an international presence. The collections are characterised by carefully worked proportions, geometric shapes and an attention to detail that gives the frames a clear identity without needing to be overly ornate.
Handmade glasses in Italian bio-acetate
Oscar Magnuson glasses are designed in Sweden and handmade in Italy. The frames are made from bio-acetate, a plant-based material produced from wood cellulose and vegetable plasticisers. The material gives the frames a lovely feel and makes it possible to work with both heavier shapes and more delicate details. Bio-acetate is also a well-considered alternative to traditional acetate and an important part of the brand’s work on materials and manufacturing.
You can tell that Oscar Magnuson puts great emphasis on craftsmanship. From how the front of the frame is shaped to how the temples meet the hinges, there is an attention to detail that we appreciate. These are glasses where both material and design are given room.
Quiet luxury with an identity of its own
Oscar Magnuson is a fine example of what is often called quiet luxury, a more understated form of luxury where quality, materials and design speak for themselves. You will find no big logos or details meant to reveal who is behind the frames. It simply is not needed.
Instead it is the proportions, the clean lines and the distinctive colourways that give the glasses their identity. Some models are discreet and pared-back, while others have heavier shapes and an almost sculptural expression. What they share is that the design always takes centre stage.
That is also something we really appreciate about Oscar Magnuson. The glasses feel exclusive without having to show it off. Even the more expressive models have a natural elegance that makes them just as interesting for those looking for something timeless as for those who want glasses with a little more attitude.
Many of the models also go very well with lightly tinted lenses. That can be a great way to bring out the character of the frame and create a more personal expression, something we are happy to help with.
