Oliver Peoples is one of those brands that does not need big logos to be noticed. Instead, much of the feeling lies in the shape, the materials and the small details. Glasses that may seem quite simple at first glance, but where it is often precisely the proportions and details that make all the difference.

The brand was founded in Los Angeles in 1987 and has since created a distinct style of its own, inspired by American vintage, Hollywood and the creative scene of California. The story of Oliver Peoples begins in West Hollywood, where the first store opened on Sunset Boulevard in 1987. From the very start, much inspiration came from older American glasses and sunglasses. That became the foundation of a design language that is still recognisable today.

Over the years Oliver Peoples has managed to be modern without becoming particularly trend-driven. Many of the models have clear vintage influences, but the shapes and colours are often so well balanced that they work just as well today as when they were first launched.

That is also one reason why several of Oliver Peoples’ older models are still in the collection and remain just as relevant.
Japanese craftsmanship and an eye for detail
Craftsmanship is an important part of Oliver Peoples. The connection to Japan goes all the way back to the first collection, and many of the brand’s frames are still made there today. Italy also plays an important role in production.

The materials are carefully chosen, and the collections include both acetate frames and slim metal frames. What characterises Oliver Peoples above all, however, is the details. Instead of big logos, the brand works with small, discreet signatures and details that you often only discover when you look more closely at the frame.

This also makes Oliver Peoples glasses relatively easy to wear. They make their mark through their shape and design rather than through a big brand name on the temple.
Iconic Oliver Peoples models
Over the years Oliver Peoples has created a number of models that have become true classics. Some have been around for much of the brand’s history, while others were created with inspiration from some of the best-dressed figures in film history.

O’Malley is perhaps the clearest example. The model was launched as early as 1988 and was inspired by the glasses worn by Peter O’Malley, former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. The relatively delicate, rounded shape has since become one of Oliver Peoples’ best-known models.

Another classic is the Gregory Peck, inspired by the glasses Gregory Peck wore as Atticus Finch in the film To Kill a Mockingbird. Cary Grant has also been given his own model, inspired by the distinctive glasses he wore in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest.

What the models have in common is a clear connection to the American style and film history that have always been close to Oliver Peoples.
Oliver Peoples O’Malley
O’Malley almost deserves a chapter of its own. It is one of the models most clearly associated with Oliver Peoples, and at the same time a good example of how a truly good frame shape can outlive both trends and decades.

The shape is rounded without being fully round, and the size is relatively delicate. That makes O’Malley a frame that works on many different faces and is easy to combine with different styles.

The model has also been made in countless colours and finishes over the years. If you are looking for a pair of classic Oliver Peoples glasses, O’Malley is therefore still a very good place to start.
