Retro sunglasses
Retro sunglasses have a way of making it look as though you’ve put a lot of thought into your style, even when you haven’t. Perhaps that’s why they never really go out of fashion. They draw inspiration from some of the most iconic decades and combine them with modern materials and lenses. The result is sunglasses that feel just as natural on an outdoor terrace in Stockholm as they do on a road trip along the coast.

Retro sunglasses with style from the past
Retro sunglasses take inspiration from some of the most iconic decades in fashion history. Here you will find everything from large round frames and classic pilot models to angular shapes from the 70s, 80s and 90s. What they all have in common is that they combine timeless design with personality and character.
The right frame can strengthen an expression, give an outfit more character and become the detail that ties it all together, the icing on the cake. Some choose a discreet model with a vintage feel, while others let their sunglasses take centre stage and become an obvious eye-catcher.
At Hultins Optik we hand-pick sunglasses from some of the world’s most interesting brands. In addition to design and expression, we put great emphasis on comfort, quality and good UV protection. The result is sunglasses that not only look good today but that you will want to wear for many years to come.
Retro sunglasses from well-known brands
Retro is a broad concept, and different brands interpret the style in their own way. Moscot has become known for its characterful frames inspired by New York’s long eyewear history. Cutler and Gross often combines retro shapes with a confident attitude and a clear sense of design, while Oliver Peoples stands for a more classic and sophisticated expression where the details speak for themselves. If you are looking for a more affordable option, the Swedish brand Metro has also launched several interesting models with clear retro influences in its latest collections.
The great thing about retro sunglasses is that they work just as well with a relaxed everyday style as with a more dressed-up look. Many of the models feel just as current today as when they first made their mark several decades ago.
What characterises retro sunglasses?
When we talk about retro sunglasses, we mainly mean models inspired by the eyewear fashion of the 60s and 70s. It might be large pilot frames with tinted lenses, round metal frames or heavier acetate models with distinct shapes and a little more character.
A retro frame does not have to be old. Many of today’s sunglasses are based on designs from earlier decades, sometimes with almost exactly the same expression as the originals and sometimes in a more modern version. Some models have also become true classics that remain relevant whatever is in fashion.
Acetate pilot frames with gradient-tinted lenses
One of our personal favourites right now is acetate pilot frames. The classic pilot shape is often associated with thin metal frames, but in acetate the model gets a completely different depth and a bolder character. Combine that with gradient-tinted lenses and the result is a retro-cool style that feels both modern and timeless at the same time.
Acetate pilot frames suit many face shapes and work just as well on holiday as in the city. If you want a pair of sunglasses with personality without them feeling over the top, it is an option well worth a closer look. Take the opportunity to check out our “guide to pilot glasses“.
